Achut Deng was born in South Sudan, where her childhood was marked by the devastation of the Sudanese civil war. At the age of six, Achut tragically lost her family in a massacre. She spent over a decade in refugee camps, enduring harsh conditions and the emotional toll of displacement. At sixteen, she was relocated to the United States, where she began the long journey of rebuilding her life.
Her memoir, Don't Look Back, chronicles her harrowing experiences of war, survival, and her transition to life in America. Now a proud U.S. citizen living in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Achut works in human resources at a meatpacking plant. She is also a dedicated single mother of three sons and a motivational speaker who shares her story with audiences around the country. Her resilience, courage, and unwavering dedication to providing a better life for her family exemplify the strength of the human spirit.
